Michael Lazarus (1969, Newton/USA), an artist and professor at the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland, pushes the boundaries of traditional characteristics of paintings and produces striking compositions with graphic qualities. The artist, who received his bachelor’s of fine arts in painting from Rhode Island School of Design followed by an master’s of fine arts from Visual Arts School of New York, seeks to preserve the natural qualities of wood grain and paint drips while contrasting clean lines and recognizable symbols. He creates icon-like paintings in eye-popping colors on partly cut-out panels. The intricate, layered compositions update Op Art with a darkly psychedelic spin.
